romney head to key battleground states today after having their say at their first face-to-face debate. an exclusive cbs 5 surveyusa poll of adults in california shows that 48% believe romney won compared with 34% for president obama. 18% felt there was no clear winner. last night's forum in colorado focused mainly on the economy and other domestic issues. that debate took place at the university of denver, colorado being a big swing state in this election, as well. the focus of the debate was the economy. but big bird somehow got into the dialogue there. and, of course, as we mentioned, there were some polls that showed that romney came out ahead of the president on that first debate. bigad shaban joins us live from denver with some highlights from last night. president obama and mitt romney are in a dead heat as they head into their first face-to-face debate this evening. the survey is from united technologies and the national journal of congressional connection. it shows the two men at 47% each among likely voters nationwide. other recent polls have showed the president with a narrow edge. bigad shaban has more on the evening's contest in colorado. good morning. >> reporter: michelle, good morning to you. certainly the economy is expected to be issue number one at the hall in the university of denver. the president is expected to arrive in colorado this afternoon while mitt romney has been in the state since monday. >>> reporter: the stage is built. the cameras are in place and the candidates are in their final hours of preparation. >> governor, are you ready for tomorrow? >> i'm get there is. >> reporter: mitt romney took a break from his rehearsal to grab a burrito. president obama went sightseeing at hoover dam. tonight they will face a lot of questions about the economy. >> i'm not interested in creating democratic or republican job

the campaign trail yesterday following their first debate in colorado. the president acknowledged romney's stellar performance but said romney can't pay for his tax plan without sticking it to the middle class. >> we can't afford to double down on the same top-down economic policies that got us into this mess. that is not a jobs plan. >> they plan on raising taxes on the american people and that will kill jobs. we will not let that happen. we want to create jobs, not kill jobs in this country. >> when asked which candidate would best handle unemployment, romney topped the president 51 to 45% in a cnn/orc poll taken before the debate. >>> well, that debate the president's debate performance has been widely criticized as not up to snuff. former vice president al gore speculated the colorado altitude may have been a factor. >> when you go to 5,000 feet -- >> exactly. >> -- and you only have a few hours to adjust -- >> that's interesting. >> it may be a stretch. romney was at the same altitude although he spent a little more time in denver before the debate. hm. >> hm. i know a little bit a

for the big showdown, the first debate between president obama and republican challenger mitt romney. the candidates will spend today getting ready for tomorrow's event in colorado. the president held no rallies yesterday but he did visit a campaign office in henderson, nevada. it's not far from where he and his staff have been strategizing. romney spoke to a crowd of supporters at an air and space museum in denver. >> this president is taking us on a path that's not working. he is making us more and more like europe. i don't want to be like europe. europe doesn't work in europe. >> at the university of denver crews are putting on the final touches, transforming the arena into a debate set. yesterday just 92 of the university's students learned their names were drawn in a lottery for tickets to the debate. it's a hot ticket. your ticket to the debate is right here on cbs 5. that's beginning tomorrow evening at 6:00. >>> nearly all americans will see higher taxes if congress fails to renew tax cuts. that's all according to a new report from the tax policy center. the two major parties
